As sustainability becomes an increasingly important factor for clients and supply chains, CPW (originally Couch Perry Wilkes)  is taking proactive steps to reduce its environmental impact while strengthening its business credentials. For over 40 years, CPW has established it’s presence across the UK as an industry-leading MEP and low carbon consultancy, with the company making sustainability a central part of how it works, both internally and with clients.

A strategic approach to renewable energy

CPW was motivated to move to renewable energy by a combination of net zero ambitions, green business ethics, and a desire to lower carbon emissions. Engaging employees and supply chain partners was also a key consideration, helping ensure sustainability was embedded across the organisation rather than treated as a standalone initiative.

SmartestEnergy Business was selected as the renewable energy supplier due to its Carbon Trust accreditation, trusted green credentials, and competitive pricing - providing confidence that the move to renewables was both credible and cost-effective.

Don’t be scared. Start with small adjustments and engage staff early to get their buy-in.

Communicating progress and building engagement

To ensure transparency and buy-in, CPW actively shares its green credentials through annual reporting, employee updates, and its website. This open approach has helped engage teams internally while clearly demonstrating progress to clients and stakeholders.

Beyond renewable electricity, the business has introduced a range of practical sustainability initiatives, including the use of electric vehicles, reducing paper usage, and prioritising ethical sourcing across its operations.

Overcoming challenges through collaboration

One of the key challenges was engaging staff in sustainability efforts. To address this, CPW created a focus group of sustainability champions who helped communicate goals and initiatives across teams. This collaborative approach ensured employees felt involved and motivated, rather than directed.

Delivering measurable business benefits

These efforts have led to a lower carbon footprint and increased customer loyalty. As clients increasingly request evidence of carbon reduction and sustainability practices, CPW is well positioned to meet these requirements - helping secure new work and strengthen existing relationships. The company’s sustainability credentials are further supported by Planet Mark certification for the fifth consecutive year, and an improved GRESB ESG score of 10% (achieving 73/100 in 2025).

Looking ahead

CPW plans to continue building on its progress by replacing boilers with heat pumps and installing solar PV at its head office, further reducing emissions and increasing on-site renewable generation.

For other businesses starting their sustainability journey, the advice is practical and reassuring: “Don’t be scared. Start with small adjustments and engage staff early to get their buy-in.”

By combining clear strategy, employee engagement, and practical action, CPW demonstrates how sustainability can deliver real environmental and commercial value.
